Hammond, George H(enry) (1838–1886)

US meatpacker, who developed the use of refrigeration cars to transport meat. After working as a butcher and a mattressmaker, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, in 1854. In 1857 he opened a meat market and slaughter house. Hammond sent the first load of refrigerated beef from Detroit to Boston in 1868–69. By 1885 he had over 800 refrigeration cars in use. He expanded his operation to Omaha, Nebraska, and Hammond, Indiana (the town was named after him). Hammond was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
