Hammond-Stroud, Derek (1929- )

English baritone. After studying with Gerhard Hüsch he made his London debut as Creon in a concert performance of Haydn's Orfeo in 1955; his stage debut was in 1957, as Publio in La Clemenza di Tito/The Clemency of Titus. From 1962 he sang with the Sadler's Wells Theatre (later the English National Opera Ensemble) as Bartolo, Melitone, Alberich, and Beckmesser. He appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, from 1971, and at Glyndebourne from 1973. His New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1977, as Faninal. He sang at Munich until 1983, and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House until 1989. He was awarded an OBE in 1987.
