Hammondsport

Village in Urbana township, Steuben County, south-central New York State; population (1990) 930. Hammondsport is in the Finger Lake area, and lies at the southern tip of Keuka Lake, 31 km/19 mi west of Watkins Glen.

Hammondsport is the state's most important centre for grape growing and wine and champagne making. Tourism is important to the local economy; there is also some light manufacturing. The village was the birthplace of aviator and inventor Glenn H Curtiss (1878–1939), and was an important early aviation site; it is sometimes called the ‘Cradle of American Aviation’.
