Hampden

Town in Penobscot County, south-central Maine; population (1990) 6,000. Hampden lies on the Penobscot River, 8 km/5 mi southwest and downstream of Bangor.

Hampden is in an agricultural area just outside Bangor, and contains both suburban housing and apple orchards. The reformer Dorothea Lynde Dix was born here in 1802, and a memorial park is sited at her birthplace.
