Hampden County

Administrative district in southwestern Massachusetts; area 1,601 sq km/618 sq mi, population (1997 est) 441,000. Hampden County lies in the Connecticut Valley, along the Connecticut border, and has its seat at Springfield. The industrial agglomeration at its centre includes Springfield, Chicopee, and Holyoke. To the east and west are largely rural areas. It is drained by the Westfield, Chicopee, and other rivers flowing into the Connecticut River.
