Hampe, Michael (1935– )

German stage director. He studied in Munich and Vienna and worked first at Berne and Zurich (1961–70). He was director of the National Theatre in Mannheim 1972–75, and in Cologne from 1975. He made his Salzburg debut in 1982, with Così fan tutte/All Women Do It, and directed Andrea Chénier at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1984, returning for Il barbiere di Siviglia/The Barber of Seville in 1985, and La Cenerentola/Cinderella in 1990. He has also worked in Munich and Vienna.
