Hampshire County

Administrative district of central Massachusetts, with its seat at Northampton; area 1,368 sq km/528 sq mi, population (1997 est) 150,100.

Situated in the Connecticut River valley, Hampshire County is well-known for its cluster of prestigious colleges and universities in the Amherst–Northampton area. There is some long-established industry in Northampton and Easthampton. The county is otherwise largely rural and agricultural, with growth occurring in residential areas and in university-related research and business.
