Hampton, Christopher

Hampton, Christopher (1946– )

English playwright. His plays include The Philanthropist (1970; Evening Standard Best Comedy Award). He has translated and adapted many plays for the stage, including the award-winning Les Liasons Dangereuses (1985) for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Malcolm Bradbury's The History Man (1981) for BBC television. He has also written several screenplays, including Dangerous Liasons (1988; Academy Award for best screenplay).

Born in the Azores, he was resident dramatist at the Royal Court Theatre 1968–70. Other screenplays include the Dr Jeckyll/Mr Hyde thriller Mary Reilly (1996) and the film adaptation of Graham Greene's The Quiet American (2002).
