Hamtramck

City in Wayne County, southeastern Michigan, entirely surrounded by Detroit; population (1990) 18,400. It is named after Colonel George Hamtramck, a Franco-German hero of the Revolution and the first American commander of Fort Detroit.

Automobile manufacture became important in Hamtramck early in the 20th century, and remains its predominant industry. Among its other manufactures are machinery, electrical supplies, roofing, and car parts, paints, and varnish. There has been a large Polish community in Hamtramck since 1910. After World War II, many other people of Slavic origin came to settle here.
