geisha

Female entertainer (music, singing, dancing, and conversation) in Japanese teahouses and at private parties. Geishas survive mainly as a tourist attraction. They are apprenticed from childhood and highly skilled in traditional Japanese arts and graces. There are now only approximately 20,000 geishas in Japan compared to 100,000 before World War II.
