Handford, Maurice (1929-1986)

English conductor and horn player. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He was principal horn with the Hallé Orchestra 1949-61 and conducted the orchestra from 1966, notably in complex scores by Olivier Messiaen and Witold Lutosławski, but resigned in 1971. He was often heard with regional British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) orchestras and was principal conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra 1971-75.
