handwriting recognition

Ability of a computer to accept handwritten input and turn it into digital data that can be processed and displayed or stored as ASCII characters on the computer screen.

In the 1990s, handwriting recognition was widely adopted for use on handheld computers, especially the ‘palmtop’ models which do not have a physical keyboard. In many cases users had to adopt a special script that the system would recognize. More advanced systems are now commonplace and able to recognise cursive (joined-up) handwriting without any special training required.
