Hanna, Mark (Marcus Alonzo) (1837-1904)

US politician. A Republican, he supported James Garfield in his presidential campaign 1880. He served in the US Senate 1896-1904 and, as chair of the Republican National Committee, engineered McKinley's victories in 1896 and 1900, becoming his closest adviser.

Hanna was born in New Lisbon, Ohio, and attended Case Western Reserve College before joining his father in the steel and coal business. He later became one of Cleveland's civic leaders, founding the Union National Bank and buying the Cleveland Herald.
