Hanno

Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.

Hanno (lived 3rd century BC)

Carthaginian general and politician. In 240 BC he caused a revolt of mercenaries by withholding their pay. He was the political leader of the aristocratic party and the principal adversary of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca.

For 35 years, from the time of Hamilcar Barca's landing in Spain until the return of Hannibal from Italy (237-203 BC), Hanno appears continually to have opposed their efforts and to have advocated peace with Rome.
