Hanotaux, Albert Auguste Gabriel

    0.03 sec.

Hanotaux, Albert Auguste Gabriel (1853-1944)

French statesman and historian. He attracted the attention of French politician Léon Gambetta with an article in La Republique française, obtaining a post in the Foreign Office, and later in the Cabinet. He was minister for foreign affairs (1894-95, 1896-98). Hanotaux opposed British policy in Africa, and did much to bring into being the French alliance with Russia.

Hanotaux was born at Beaurevoir. He was educated at St Quentin College. His publications include Etudes historiques sur les XVIe et XVIIe siècles en France/Historical Studies of France in the 16th and 17th Centuries (1886), Histoire du cardinal Richelieu/The Story of Cardinal Richelieu, volumes I and II (1893-1903), which won the Gobert prize, and the 15-volume Histoire de la nation française/History of the French Nation (1920-24).
