Hanover

Borough in York County, southern Pennsylvania; population (1990) 14,400. Hanover lies 26 km/16 mi southwest of York and 8 km/5 mi north of the Maryland border. Situated in the fertile Conewago Valley, it is a trade centre for agricultural products and has a variety of light manufactures.

Laid out in 1763, Hanover was nicknamed ‘Rogue's Rest’ because of its reputation for lax law enforcement during an early Pennsylvania–Maryland boundary dispute. It was the site of the first Civil War battle to be fought north of the Mason-Dixon line (30 June 1863). Hanover and its surrounding area are particularly known for their standardbred horses, notably the trotters and pacers raised on the 16 sq km/6 sq mi Hanover Shoe Farms (established 1926).

And the tenor in Hanover was just another example of this sort.
