| Laid out in 1763, Hanover was nicknamed ‘Rogue's Rest’ because of its reputation for lax law enforcement during an early Pennsylvania–Maryland boundary dispute. It was the site of the first Civil War battle to be fought north of the Mason-Dixon line (30 June 1863). Hanover and its surrounding area are particularly known for their standardbred horses, notably the trotters and pacers raised on the 16 sq km/6 sq mi Hanover Shoe Farms (established 1926). |
