George III was the third Hanoverian monarch and the first to be born in England and use English as his first language. German royal dynasty that ruled Great Britain and Ireland from 1714 to 1901. Under the Act of Settlement of 1701, the succession passed to the ruling family of Hannover, Germany, on the death of Queen Anne.
