Hanover County

Administrative district of east-central Virginia, between the Chickahominy (south) and North Anna and Pamunkey (north) rivers; area 1,210 sq km/467 sq mi, population (1990) 63,300. Its seat is at Hanover.

The western section of Hanover County lies in the Piedmont, while its eastern section is on the coastal plain. It is primarily agricultural, with some suburban development near Richmond (in the south). The area saw much military action during the Civil War.
