Andersen, Hans Christian (1805–1875)Danish writer of fairy tales. Examples include ‘The Ugly Duckling’, ‘The Snow Queen’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, and ‘The Emperor's New Clothes’. Their inventiveness, sensitivity, and strong sense of wonder have given these stories perennial and universal appeal; they have been translated into many languages. He also wrote adult novels and travel books.

| The Storybook Inn in Solvang, a few blocks off Highway 246, carries a Hans Christian Andersen theme. This past March 27th, at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) announced the winners of the 2006 Hans Christian Andersen Awards: Margaret Mahy (New Zealand) for writing and Wolf Erlbruch (Germany) for illustration. Like his compatriot Hans Christian Andersen, August Bournonville was a master storyteller, using the language of mime and classical dance to tell tales of good triumphing over evil, and love, if not art, conquering all. |
