Hanson, Howard

Hanson, Howard (1896–1981)

US composer. He studied music in New York and at Evanston University, Illinois. After various appointments, he gained the American Prix de Rome, and after his stay in Italy was director of the Eastman School of Music at Rochester, New York, 1924–64.

Merry Mount (after Hawthorne, 1934).

The Lament for Beowulf for chorus and orchestra (1926).

Orchestral

seven symphonies (1923–77), symphonic poems North and West, Lux aeterna, and Pan and the Priest for orchestra.

Chamber

string quartet (1923), piano quintet, concerto for piano quintet.
