Hansteen, Christopher (1784–1873)| Norwegian geophysicist. He is best known for his measurements and theories of geomagnetism. |
| He was born in Christiania (Oslo). He became professor of astronomy and applied mathematics at Christiania University 1816, and in 1833 director of the new astronomical observatory, to which he added a magnetic section 1839. He supervised the trigonometrical and topographical survey of Norway that began 1837. |
