Hansteen, Christopher (1784–1873)

Norwegian geophysicist. He is best known for his measurements and theories of geomagnetism.

He was born in Christiania (Oslo). He became professor of astronomy and applied mathematics at Christiania University 1816, and in 1833 director of the new astronomical observatory, to which he added a magnetic section 1839. He supervised the trigonometrical and topographical survey of Norway that began 1837.
