Hapag-Lloyd Aktiengesellschaft

German shipping group. It was formed in 1970 by the amalgamation of Hamburg-America Line and Norddeutscher Lloyd. The company was bought in the late 1990s by TUI AG (Hanover), a tourism conglomerate. In 2005 it acquired CP Ships Limited of Canada in a €1.7 billion deal, creating one of the top five container shipping companies in the world.
