Haptics

Science of touch-based human interaction with computers. Some joystick devices include the facility for two-way communication, and provide both joystick movement input and force and vibration or rumble based feedback to the users. Haptic devices provide physical contact and feedback from the computer to the user, as well as input from the user to the computer.

A data-glove is an example of a haptic interface, enabling the user to interact with software, often in a virtual reality world, through movements and gestures. The glove can also provide feedback to the user, in terms of movement resistance, texture, and temperature. Haptics therefore provides the user with a sense of being in physical touch with elements of the virtual visual world.

Haptics is considered to be a growth technology for the future and together with virtual reality environments is therefore the subject of much university research.
