Harahan

City in Jefferson Parish, southeastern Louisiana; population (1990) 9,900. Harahan stands on the east (north) bank of the Mississippi River, 16 km/10 mi west of New Orleans.

Founded in 1920 on what had once been farmland, Harahan is a warehousing centre that developed because of its accessibility to New Orleans's port and its railroad facilities. Industries here process mahogany veneer and make soft drinks and glass.
