Harbison, John (1938- )

US composer. He studied at Harvard and with Roger Sessions at Princeton, and taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1969-82; he was composer-in-residence for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 1982-84.

operas The Winter's Tale (1979) and Full Moon in March (after Yeats, 1979); ballets after Homer Ulysses' Raft and Ulysses' Bow (1983-84).

Orchestral

violin concerto (1980), two symphonies (1981, 1987), concerto for oboe, clarinet, and strings (1985), viola concerto (1990).

Chamber

two string quartets (1985, 1987).
