Harbison, John (1938– )

US composer. He studied at Harvard and with Roger Sessions at Princeton, and taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1969–82; he was composer-in-residence for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 1982–84.

Works Stage operas The Winter's Tale (1979) and Full Moon in March (after Yeats, 1979); ballets after Homer Ulysses' Raft and Ulysses' Bow (1983–84).

Orchestral violin concerto (1980), two symphonies (1981, 1987), concerto for oboe, clarinet, and strings (1985), viola concerto (1990).

Chamber two string quartets (1985, 1987).
