Harbour Grace

Town in southeastern Newfoundland, on the north coast of the Avalon Peninsula and the western shore of Conception Bay, 42 km/26 mi west-northwest of St John's; population (1991) 3,400.

Harbour Grace was the headquarters of the pirate and folk-hero Peter Easton in around 1610, and was settled soon after, long remaining one of the island's larger communities. During the early days of aviation, it was a starting point for attempts to cross the Atlantic Ocean, including Amelia Earhart's flight in 1932, the first solo transatlantic crossing by a woman. Its main industries today are fish processing and footwear manufacture.
