brazing |
Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.18 sec. |
brazingMethod of joining two metals by melting an alloy or metal into the joint. It is similar to soldering (see solder) but takes place at a much higher temperature. Copper and silver alloys are widely used for brazing, at temperatures up to about 900°C/1,650°F. Where high precision is needed, as in space technology, nickel-based filters are used in the temperature range 1,000–1,200°C/1,832–2,192°F. How to thank TFD for its existence? If you plan to solder nothing but costume jewelry getting started making metal jewelry with the use of an electric soldering iron will work for you, but if your plans include working with silver and gold, then you will need a small torch for what is referred to as hard soldering. |
