Harderwijk

Port in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands, on the southeastern shore of the IJsselmeer, 50 km/31 mi east of Amsterdam; population (1996) 37,400. Herring curing is the chief industry.

Harderwijk was a member of the medieval trading federation the Hanseatic League, and was the seat of a university from 1648 to 1813. The draining of parts of the IJsselmeer caused the town to decline in importance.
