Similar to Grieg in origin and reception was the nineteenth-century Norwegian violinist Ole Bull who rose quickly to iconic status playing traditional Norwegian folk tunes on a hardingfele, or Hardanger fiddle. When I saw that hardingfele in the window, I knew what she was talking about. The drone strings help give it a rich and resonant tone, and for the on-site recording sessions in Norway, Tibbetts used one microphone close to the instruments and another about 20 feet away in the Utne church where he recorded Knut Hamre and fellow Hardingfele player Turid Spildo. |
