Hardwicke, Cedric Webster

Hardwicke, Cedric Webster (1893–1964)

English actor. He excelled at character parts in a wide variety of plays. After World War II, much of which he spent in Hollywood making films to boost morale in Britain, he joined the Old Vic company in London in 1948, playing Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Faustus in Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. He then returned to New York, where he continued to act and also to direct. He was knighted in 1934.

Among other plays, he appeared in George Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah in 1924 (London) and Eden Phillpotts's The Farmer's Wife in 1924, Rudolph Besier's The Barratts of Wimpole Street in 1930, and Paul Vincent Carroll's Shadow and Substance in 1938 (New York).
