Hardy, Charles (1716–1780)

British admiral. He entered the navy c. 1730. In 1744 he was charged with the loss of a convoy to Newfoundland, but was eventually acquitted. In 1755 he was made governor of New York, and took part in the siege of Louisbourg; he was made an admiral in 1770. He was appointed governor of Greenwich Hospital in 1771, and was given command of the Channel Fleet in 1779.
