Hare, John

Hare, John (1844-1921)

English actor and theatre manager. He played at the Prince of Wales's Theatre, London, for about nine years before becoming manager of the Court Theatre 1875-79, and was in partnership with William Hunter Kendal (1843-1917) at St James's Theatre 1879-88. The Garrick was built for Hare by the librettist W S Gilbert and opened in 1889. He was knighted in 1903.
