Hare, Robert (1781-1858)

US chemist and educator. In 1801, he found the means of producing high temperatures by burning hydrogen and oxygen and invented the blowtorch. Hare was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Self-taught, he became professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania (1818-47).
