Hargeysa

Town in northwestern Somalia; population (2007 est) 522,500. It is the capital of Hargeysa province in the Ogo highland, and is a centre for trade in meat, livestock, skins, and ghee (clarified butter). The town was severely damaged during the Somali civil war in the 1980s.

Hargeysa was the capital of British Somaliland from 1941 to 1960, when the present republic of Somalia was formed by the merger of the British protectorate with Italian Somalia.
