HaridwarCity in Uttarakhand, India, 170 km/106 mi northeast of Delhi, on the right bank of the River Ganges at the foot of the Shiwalik Hills; population (1991) 147,300. The name means ‘door of Hari’ (or Vishnu). In Hindu legend Vishnu's footprint was found on the river bank; it is one of the seven holy cities of the Hindu religion and a pilgrimage centre. The triennial Khumbh Mela festival in honour of the god Shiva is held here every 12th year (see also Allahabad, Ujjain and Nashik), and attracts about 1 million pilgrims. A hydroelectric power station is now the basis for forging and electrical equipment manufacture. The river water is also diverted into the Upper Ganges Canal system for agricultural irrigation.
