Harlan County

Administrative district of southeastern Kentucky, in the Cumberland Mountains, on the Virginia border; area 1,212 sq km/468 sq mi, population (1990) 36,600. Its seat is the city of Harlan (population 2,700).

Harlan County was for many years the leading coalmining county in Kentucky. From 1916 to the 1930s, bitter conflict flared between miners and pit owners, earning it the title ‘Bloody Harlan’. Strife has been less regular since the 1940s, but continues sporadically. Harlan also has timber and some farming. Big Black Mountain, the highest point in Kentucky, is near the city of Lynch.
