Harlaw

Locality in Aberdeenshire unitary authority, Scotland, 29 km/18 mi northwest of Aberdeen. It was the site of the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, where the army of Donald, Lord of the Isles, including many Highland chiefs, was defeated by the army of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar, which included townsmen from Aberdeen. The struggle was over Donald's claim to the title Earl of Ross.

The battle was so bloody that it was referred to as ‘Red Harlaw’. Sir Walter Scott believed that it resolved the issue of power in Scotland at the time in favour of the Lowlanders.
