Harlech

Coastal town in Gwynedd, north Wales, 16 km/10 mi from Barmouth; population (2001) 1,930. The castle, now in ruins, was built by the English king Edward I between 1283 and 1289. It was taken by the Welsh chieftain Owen Glendower from 1404 to 1408, and by the Yorkists, in the Wars of the Roses, in 1468. Harlech is now a centre for visitors to Snowdonia National Park.

There is a championship golf course here. The Welsh war song ‘March of the Men of Harlech’ originated in the Yorkist siege.

During the Civil War the castle held out for Charles I, but eventually became the last one to fall to Parliament. Its ruins overlook the sea and offer impressive views of Lleyn Peninsula, Tremadog Bay and Snowdonia.
