Harlingen

City in Cameron County, the southeast Texas, USA, 180 km/112 mi south of Corpus Christi and 20 km/12 mi north of the Mexican border; population (2000) 57,600. Connected to the Rio Grande by the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, it serves as the processing and marketing area for the lower Rio Grande Valley. Industries include citrus-fruit processing, aerospace equipment, and cotton products. It is home to the Marine Military Academy (1963).

Harlingen

Port in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, situated 25 km/16 mi southwest of Leeuwarden, on the Waddenzee; population (2006 est) 15,900. Harlingen is intersected by numerous canals, has an excellent harbour, and exports dairy products, potatoes, and meat. The town was inundated by floods in 1134 and in 1566, before a dyke was constructed for its protection.
