Harmonious Blacksmith, The

Name given to the Air and Variations in Handel's E major harpsichord suite (Book I, no. 5, published in 1720). Despite the traditional story that Handel composed the piece after hearing a blacksmith singing at his work, the nickname is of 19th-century origin.
