There is a strong fairy-tale element to the three works on this fabulous record, with the ballet-pantomime Harnasie at its heart.
His ballet-pantomime Harnasie, despite musical shades of Stravinsky and scenario debts to Ravel, was constantly fascinating and compellingly delivered by CBSO and Chorus, with tenor Timothy Robinson making telling contributions.
There is also quite a list of recording projects with the CBSO - including at least one more Szymanowski disc, coupling the ballet Harnasie with some of his many orchestral songs, the Elgar and Britten Cello Concertos with Truls Mork, and Mahler's Eighth Symphony - the notoriously epic "Symphony of a Thousand" ("It's just the right place to do it, of course, with his hall and these choruses," Sir Simon comments).
