harp lute

Stringed musical instrument invented early in the 19th century. It was derived from instruments of the lute type, but had a larger number of strings held by pegs in the harp-shaped head, about half of them changeable in pitch by a fingerboard, the others remaining open and thus capable of playing only a single fixed note.
