Harpenden

Town in Hertfordshire, England, 40 km/25 mi northwest of central London; population (2001) 28,450. It is mainly residential.

At nearby Rothamsted Park in 1843, John Bennet Lawes began systematic experiments in agriculture, providing an endowment of £100,000 for their continuance in 1889. Rothamsted is still an important soil and crop research centre of the Agricultural Research Council.
