Harrismith

Town in Free State, South Africa, 272 km/169 mi to the southeast of Durban; population (district, 1991) 63,200. Situated at an altitude of 1,628 m/5,341 ft, Harrismith is a prosperous trading centre for a large part of the country west of the Drakensberg Mountains, and has a large cotton and woollen factory. The town is also one of South Africa's leading health centres. It is not far from the Kruger National Park, the Mont-aux-Sources, and northern Lesotho. In a cave near the town are San paintings.

The town is named after Lieut-Gen Sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape, 1847–52.
