Harrison, Peter

Harrison, Peter (1716-1775)

American architect, born in York, England. He emigrated in 1740 and settled at Newport, Rhode Island, as a merchant. A self-taught amateur, he was influenced by Andrea Palladio, Inigo Jones, and James Gibbs. His buildings include the Redwood Library, Newport (1749), in which he used wood to imitate rustic masonry; King's Chapel, Boston (1749); and Brick Market, Newport (1761).
