Harrisonburg

Independent city in northern Virginia; population (1990) 30,700. Harrisonburg is the seat of Rockingham County, but is administratively separate from it. The city lies 37 km/23 mi north-northeast of Staunton, in the Shenandoah Valley.

Harrisonburg is a distribution centre for agricultural products (poultry, fruit, livestock, dairy goods) and produces shoes, rayon, car parts, heating and cooling systems, and poultry raising equipment. James Madison University (founded 1908) and Eastern Mennonite College (founded 1917) are both situated here.
