Hartnell, Norman Bishop (1901–1979)

English fashion designer. He was known for his ornate evening gowns and tailored suits and coats. He worked for the designer Lucille from 1923 before founding his own studio. Appointed dressmaker to the British royal family in 1938, he created Queen Elizabeth II's wedding dress, when she was Princess Elizabeth, in 1947, and her coronation gown in 1953. The Hartnell fashion house closed in 1992. Knighted 1977.
