Hartsville

City in Darlington County, northeastern South Carolina, 32 km/21 mi northwest of Florence; population (1990) 8,400. First settled in 1760, the city grew up around Thomas Edward Hart's plantation. James Coker established a crossroads store here in 1866, built a railway connection to the Atlantic Coast Line, and later founded Coker College (1908).

Hartsville produces textiles, paper products, plastic, and bricks, and is an agricultural trade centre. The Coker Experimental Seed Farms, noted for developing certain varieties of cotton and other crops, are an historic landmark. The H B Robinson nuclear power plant lies just to the northwest, on Lake Robinson, and was built in 1970.
