Hartung, Hans (1904-1989)

German-born French abstract painter. First influenced by German Impressionism and expressionism, he turned to nonfigurative painting by 1922. Typical of his work are free improvisations in monochrome.

Hartung fled from the Nazi regime in the 1930s and moved to France, serving in the Foreign Legion during World War II and becoming a French citizen 1942.
