Harvey, E(dmund) Newton (1887–1959)

US cell biologist. During World War II, he made important contributions to the study of decompression sickness and wound ballistics. He made major advances in the fields of neurophysiology and cell regeneration but is most noted for his pioneering research on bioluminescence in plant and animal cells. Harvey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He taught physiology at Princeton University (1911–56), while concurrently travelling the world as a visiting lecturer.
